What it does

One fan pulls cool air in across the hashboards, the other pushes hot air out. They run at around 6000 RPM, which is roughly four times the speed of a desktop case fan, and they are the single loudest thing about a mining machine by a wide margin. A rack of these is genuinely hearing damage territory.

The controller regulates them against die temperature rather than running them flat out, because fan power is real power. Sixty watts each is a hundred and twenty watts that produces no hashes, which is why farms with good ambient air run their fans slower and their machines cooler at once.

Both are required. A machine running one fan is not a machine running at half cooling, it is a machine with no airflow path, because the shroud depends on having a pressure difference across it.

How it fails

Bearing wear from continuous duty. The controller sees RPM drop below threshold and shuts the machine down rather than let it cook.
