What it does

Mining is not a bursty workload. A gaming PSU spends most of its life at twenty percent load with occasional spikes, and it is designed around that duty cycle. A mining PSU sits at ninety plus percent of rated output continuously, for months, and is built accordingly: heavier rectifiers, better capacitors, and a fan that never idles.

It converts 200 to 277 V AC from the wall into a 12 V DC rail delivering upward of 300 amps. That rail is what the hashboards draw on. The reason mining hardware wants high voltage input is simple resistive loss: at 110 V the current required for 3600 W is high enough to make the cabling itself a heat source.

Undersizing here does not fail loudly. It browns out the rail under load, the boards lose sync mid nonce range, and you spend a week blaming the pool.

How it fails

Capacitor ageing under permanent full load. The rail sags before it dies, so hashrate drifts down for weeks before anything actually stops.
